Abstract
The first spanish institution for the specific training of Physical Education teachers was operating in Madrid between 1887 and 1892. Its ephemeral existence served to provide a large number of Secondary School with a qualified Gymnastics teachers. The Central School incorporated into its teaching the gymnastic tendencies of the era, from the gymnastics of Amorós to military gymnastics, including Swedish gymnastics and English sports. The School began to operate four years after passing of the Act wich created it, and was provisionally housed on the ground floor of a building with limited space. Those graduating from the school would still have to wait for gymnastics to be declared a compulsory subject.
