Abstract
The objective of this study is to design an instrument to measure gender stereotypes in physical activity and sport in Spanish children and adolescents. To accomplish this, a questionnaire was administered to 593 students aged 9 to 13. This ad-hoc questionnaire consists in 24 items grouped into 5 dimensions. Both the reliability and validity were analyzed using structural equation models with the LISREL 8.8 software. The value of the Cronbach’s alpha was 0.899 and the confirmatory factor analysis showed very satisfactory results (X2/gl = 4.47, RMSEA = .059, CFI = 0.95; GFI = 0,92; RMR = .064). The values of reliability and mean and compound variance showed acceptable indices. Therefore, the instrument fulfils all the technical requirements to be a valid and reliable way to measure gender stereotypes in physical activity and sport. It is essential to promote equality and respect among children in sport and physical activity starting from nursery school in order to challenge gender stereotypes, especially in primary school in the field of physical education.
