Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a short-term conditioning aquatic program on the health-related fitness of apparently healthy women. Twenty-two assimptomatic women (20.56±SD0.98 years), all undergraduate students of physical activity and sports sciences but not involved in competitive sports, participated in the study. The subjects took part in a short-term aquatic fitness program (aquaerobic) consisting on eight 30-minute activity sessions. Their health-related physical fitness level was assessed immediately before and after the intervention. The results showed a decrease in fat body weight and an improvement in flexibility, hand grip strength, abdominal muscles endurance, balance, and estimated maximal aerobic power. We concluded that: a) a program of short-term aerobic physical activity in aquatic environment is effective for the loss of body fat, and b) also for the improvement of most health-related physical fitness components in apparently healthy women, particularly in strength, flexibility, and body balance.
