Abstract
This study aims to analyse the impact of one-on-one and direct blocking on effectiveness in shooting. An ad-hoc instrument called Observational System of Basic Concepts in Basketball (SOCFB) was developed to study offensive plays by Fútbol Club Barcelona Regal in the King’s Cup in Spain in the 2013-14 season. In total 643 offensive plays were analysed and it was found that: a) only 34% of the plays by the player with the ball ended in a shot while 66% ended in passes; b) the main result in one-on-one plays in the zone were shots (z = 6.2, p <0.001); c) in one-on-one plays outside the zone statistically significant relationships were found with the outside space of the zone (z = 3.3, p <0.001) and the laterality of the left-hand side space (z = 2, p <0.05); d) in direct blocking statistically significant relationships were observed with plays that were not completed. From these results we can draw the following conclusions: a) direct blocking is the most common and is used as a way of generating advantages, b) one-on-ones in the zone generate more shots and greater effectiveness.
