2012 London Paralympic Games: An inclusive Games
Miguel Ángel Torralba
Abstract
The 2012 London Paralympic Games have been excellent and definitely the best games ever. However, their most defining feature has been their level of inclusion. Following the model of the Olympic Games the organisers gave free rein to the values of the British people and, as founders of the Paralympic movement at Stoke Mandeville through Dr. Guttmann, combined the sports events with publicising the abilities of disabled athletes. The exploits of the Paralympic athletes have conveyed the values that they so magnificently embody to the whole of society through the media. High participation at 166 countries and more than 4,000 athletes made these Games into the second largest sports event in the world. Spain is one of the most powerful members of the Paralympic movement as it is in the top positions in the medal table and a leader in the dissemination of educational models and also takes part in research sponsored by the International Paralympic Committee.
