Abstract
This paper investigates whether there are gender inequalities in the field of research and dissemination of knowledge in physical activity and sports sciences. To that end, 433 articles, which constitute the sample for this study, have been examined from two leading publications that met some previously stipulated requirements. By field of knowledge, sports training has the largest exclusive samples for both men and women, with the relative proportion for the male gender being more than five times higher, while in the cases of recreation, leisure and tourism and also in sports administration and management, none of the articles used a sample composed only of women. Depending on the kind of sport studied, it has been found that samples composed only of men are greater than samples composed only of women, including in the artistic sports category which is traditionally associated with the female gender. Over a period of eight years there is no change in the number of articles with female samples, while by contrast the number of mixed samples or samples composed only of men gradually increases. In the discussion and conclusions section there are some ideas about the need to use gender variables in a way that helps to avoid bias.
